10.    Habitat Defining Species List- – Refer to the Schematic Design Map created from the completion of step 9.  Notice that the Elements in the Schematic Design Map are general (wetland, mixed fruit, nut orchard, timber lot, annual garden, etc.)  The Habitat Defining Species List is a way to refine the general Elements from the Schematic Design Map and make steps towards actual implementation by generating a list of the specific species from which to choose to fulfill the needs of each proposed habitat within the design.

• Habitat Defining Species List -.Generate a short list of specific species that will fulfill the needs of each general habitat within the design. For Example: Coppice woodlot = Black Locust, Hazel and Willow

11.   Project Detail Designs – Each member of the design group takes on one detailed aspect of the overall design which they research and present (housing, earthworks, market garden, greywater system, etc.)

• Project Detail Design Visuals – Each member creates close-up drawings and/or other visuals for a specific detail.  Each member has 5 minutes to deliver this section of the presentation.  Visuals greatly aid the process of demonstrating details in a limited amount of time.

The key to this phase is the last bit of research and planning and estimation before you take the leap into design.  Thus you will be looking back at the schematic phase for the bubbles you created and defining them further.

• Create close-up drawings and/or other visuals for each specific Project Detail.  Consider the use of differing views (side view, aerial view, floor plan, etc) to be sure to fully explain the design
• Be creative and choose an area that strongly interests each design team member such as house floor plan & design, greywater system plan, composting program, cottage industry, rotational grazing plan, orchard development & succession, kitchen garden design, etc.

Remember that each member has only 5 minutes to present the assigned section of the design.  Explain how the Detail Design integrates into the overall design first, then focus on the key design aspects that most effectively reinforce the principles and ethics of permaculture.

Remember to have a key, scale, and outline the key important elements thickly and darkly.  Use the back-of-the-room-test with your visual both drawn and when or if transferred to PowerPoint to test its view-ability.

Patch Design Guidance:

Zoom in on a particular aspect for example roof cathment system.  You would want to research and present on the following:

• Size of tank based on family needs and catchment area
• guttering system as well as filtration possibilites
• material and cost of tank
• location and energy use from the tank (gravity or pump fed)
• where the overflow of the tank will go to
• how it interrelates with microclimate
• can plants be grown on it as it might be a trellis
